Trying on lipstick at a makeup counter is kind of like speed dating, you shuffle from brand to color to texture, quickly dismissing a ton of tubes based on a few seconds worth of performance and appearance on your lips. The beauty consultant with penciled-in eyebrows and heavy foundation will try to convince you that you really should go with the garish color you just doodled onto your lips but you'll resist because, in the end, you know what's right for you!
Then ever so often, a lipstick will come along that just sweeps you of your feet entirely. That's how I feel about Tarte's Amazonian Butter Lipstick in Poppy (19$). The warmish-red color makes this the kind of subdued red that you can wear around the office or out to buy groceries without looking like you are vamping it up. The texture is a dream, with a mixture of three types of butter (cupuacu, murumuru, and shea) to condition lips as well as Vitamin E and mineral pigments to leave your lips with a soothing tingle. This is not the type of lipstick that you need to wear a gloss over, which is great if you're lazy like me. I hate layering makeup.
My one complaint about this lipstick is that it's not super long-lasting. As a coffee drinker, I find myself having to reapply the color throughout the day, as most of it ends up on the rim of my mug.
But otherwise, I'd say this lipstick is a pretty safe bet if you're looking for a good Valentine's Day lip investment.
Did I mention how beautiful the case is? A little beauty can't hurt.
